| Hobbs swimmer fishing for more state records
Betzen, born in Roswell and bred in Hobbs, trained in Dallas the past two summers. Already a state-meet record holder, Betzen isn't status quo. Her laurels rest in a scrapbook.That's why Betzen is forgoing a third title in the 200 yards of individual medley this weekend at the New Mexico State Swimming and Diving Championships at Albuquerque Academy."All four years that I've gone to state, I've swam the 200 IM. This year, I wanted to race against Marissa Campbell," says Betzen, ninth academically in her senior class of 414 at Hobbs High School. "I'm really excited for that."Betzen is not alone on that one.Campbell, an Albuquerque Manzano junior, is the state leader in the 100 yards of butterfly. She earned the top seed with a time of 57.56 seconds on Saturday at the West Mesa Invitational in Albuquerque.
'DADA, SURREALISM, READYMADE & FOUND OBJECT'
GIVEN THE definitions of "Dada" and "Surrealism," the 2nd City Council Art Gallery must have been prepared for just about anything when it sent out a call for artists to submit works for "Dada, Surrealism, Readymade & Found Object," its current exhibit. But surprisingly, very few wild, wooly or off-the-wall submissions were received. In fact, most of the works by the 30 .
Family wishes upon a 'star'
Lee Ann Brown makes her 7-year-old daughter, McKayla, giggle as they play in McKayla's room after school Wednesday. Brown, who is battling brain tumors and breast cancer, says playing with her daughter and keeping her busy helps to keep McKayla's mind off Lee Ann's cancer. McKayla desperately wants to take a family trip to Disney World while her mom is still able to travel, but the family does not have the funds for the trip. Friends of the family are working with a Florida-based nonprofit agency to raise money to make the McKayla's wish a reality. .
Quilt show to benefit Historical Society
The Warren County Historical Society, headquartered in downtown Lebanon, retains artifacts from the Paleolithic era to the 21st century. Museum official pride themselves on having one of the finest county museums collection in the country. So it might seem a bit strange that a historical society like this hosts craft events such as a quilt show and scrapbooking workshops. .
